Karen Armstrong, a Classroom Earth teacher grant-recipient. Working with her students at Watkins Glen High School, Armstrong hopes to purchase infrared cameras to identify sources of heat loss in homes. In partnership with the Office for the Aging (targeting the elderly population), Armstrong's students are assigned to homes of the elderly to conduct energy audits.
Tying this project to the classroom, Armstrong focuses her attention to pollution, political impact and social impact of fuel choices. Based on their findings, the students will then research weatherproofing solutions to conserve energy use in the homes they assess.
Currently, Armstrong is in the planning stages of this project and is researching affordable infrared camera options to conduct the surveys. Confident with the partnership with the Office of the Aging, she hopes to begin the project this spring. Be sure to check this page later for updates as the project progresses.
