Debra Weitzel - Middleton High School
Debra Weitzel of Middleton, Wisconsin is the first-ever winner of the Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award. Each year the award honors a 5th-12th grade educator who has successfully and creatively integrated environmental education into his or her daily education programs.
Debra has shown not only that integrating environmental education into a core curriculum is possible, but also that it can really make a difference. Her students perform well on AP exams, are involved in their community, and truly want to make a difference in the world.
Debra started out at Middleton High School in 1978, already a pioneer, teaching a class called “Our Environment”. Over time, she helped to create a new curriculum in the school by combining the social studies and environmental studies curricula. This innovative collaboration recognizes that environmental issues involve social activities, public policy and economic tradeoffs as well as science and technology. She focuses on real world applications and her AP students are required to spend at least 12 hours volunteering for the environment. Each year close to 100 students take the class.
Debra also arranges independent studies for students to go in depth on a particular topic. Her classes have field trips that range from a quick trip out on school property during class to an annual fall overnight camping trip. To support her classroom instruction, Debra frequently calls on professionals from a variety of organizations to speak to her students and in some cases act as mentors. As testament to her efforts, many of her former students have gone on to environmental careers, serving as environmental engineers, naturalists, urban planners, organic farmers, elected officials and environmental lawyers.
Debra also walks the talk, literally. While her family does own a Toyota Prius, she often walks to school. She is also Vice-President of the Madison Audubon Society and lives in a green home. As part of the Bartlett Award, Debra receives $5,000 to support her continued environmental education efforts at Middleton High School.
