Hidden Relationships: Energy Sources and Water Usage

In this lesson, students will examine the major ways that water is utilized for a variety of energy sources. They will also participate in a photographic matching activity that compares energy usages to further understand the role water plays in energy consumption. Lastly, students will analyze the amounts of water used by various energy sources through a graphing activity.

It's Easy Being Green: Green Building and Climate Change

This lesson introduces students to green building practices and their benefits. Students collaborate to design their own green building, conduct an energy audit of their school and use the resulting data to suggest ways to improve the school's energy efficiency and reduce its carbon output.

This app for iPhone provides a quick and easy method of estimating household water usage. This can serve as a supplement to water use lessons.

Water Conservation and Dietary Connections

In this lesson, students calculate total and average daily water consumption including both direct and indirect uses. They compare and contrast their water use with other students and represent their data graphically.

Be Water Wise! School Water Audit

EE Week's Be Water Wise! School Water Audit guides students through their own audit of school water use, encouraging them to "find the leaks" in the water use at school and develop strategies to improve water conservation.

iGo Vampire Power Calculator

The Vampire Power Calculator from iGo calculates exactly how much money the electronics at home or school are draining each year. The app also includes a quiz and tips and tricks for saving energy and money. Another great tool for energy audits.

Light Bulb Finder

The Light Bulb Finder is an app that helps determine the best light bulbs for their fixtures and preferences. It also places an order, and calculates savings and payback period from replacing current light bulbs. A great tool for a home or school energy audit.

 

Energyville

This online, interactive game puts students in charge of the energy demands of a city. Players must choose energy sources in the present that will create a sustainable future city in 2030.

Energy Hog

In this online game, students eliminate energy hogs that pig out on wasted energy - in the process discovering fun facts about using energy wisely at home. The teacher's section of the game's website provides a set of classroom activities that include lessons on energy sources, energy use at home and how to bust energy hogs to save energy.
