Greening STEM -- Technology Goes Wild: New Tools for Connecting Classrooms with Nature

On March 14, 2012, National Environmental Education Week (EE Week) partnered with National Geographic Education and Project Noah to bring educators the information and tools they need to take technology outside, engaging students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning in their own schoolyard or local public land.

Schoolyard Habitat Projects

This spring, schools across the U.S. will undertake a Schoolyard Habitat Project as part of an educator professional development initiative known as PBLU.

U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools

 

The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) recognition award honors schools that are exemplary in reducing environmental impact and costs; improving the health and wellness of students and staff; and providing effective environmental and sustainability education, which incorporates STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.

Schoolyard Habitat Program

The Schoolyard Habitat Program helps teachers and students create a naturalized wildlife habitat for classroom field studies and observations. The Program provides technical and organizational assistance to schools to create outdoor classrooms that are effective as educational tools and sustainable habitats. Qualified schools or organizations serving K-12 students are eligible for funding and may receive up to $8,000 for projects.

Students Connecting to Global Sustainability

Green Living Project’s curriculum, “Students Connecting to Global Sustainability” uses multimedia and technology to bring unique sustainability-centered education into the classroom. Environmental Project Based Learning (E-PBL)

Dirty Hands, Clean Planet! Environmental education projects create a compelling context for engaging students and enable teachers to meet standards, build 21st Century skills, and develop life-long stewards. Hear about various project examples, including one available at BIE’s new online training program, PBLU.org – the Schoolyard Habitat Project, which involves students in a real-world project to enhance their school campus.

Energy Hog

The Alliance to Save Energy’s Energy Hog program is an online computer activity that reveals "energy hogs" in our homes that can be eliminated, thus saving energy and protecting the environment.  The website also includes the Energy Hog Challenge, a set of classroom activities that can be downloaded for free. Correlates to National Science Education Standards as well as Colorado state standards.  Appropriate for 3rd-6th grade students. 

Are you an Energy Saver STAR?

Developed by the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, Oregon, Are You an Energy Saver Star?  asks students to collect data on energy usage and perform energy audits in a number of capacities.  The results are then analyzed to see where the most conservation could be achieved.  Adheres to state standards in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.  Best suited for grades 4-7.
