Project WILD

DESCRIPTION

Project WILD offers environmental education for grades K-12 through an attractive 500-page curriculum and activity guide focusing on wildlife. Project WILD was created in 1983 and is co-sponsored by the Council for Environmental Education, a national organization based in Houston, TX and the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. The curriculum and activity guide was designed in consultation with teachers and scientific experts nationwide. Over 900,000 teachers have been trained on and use the materials of Project WILD which has reached millions of students.

AUDIENCE / GRADE LEVEL

Project WILD focuses on grades K-12 with activities adaptable to specific grade levels.

CONTENT AND TOPICS

Since students have a strong natural interest in wildlife, understanding the natural history and science of wildlife species and their habitats is an effective way to create broader environmental knowledge.

Project Wild:
  • Teaches about wildlife in the context of habitat;
  • Inspires more effective science learning, reading and inquiry skills;
  • Is adaptable for the classroom, nature center, zoo, or museum
  • Can be used in conjunction with current school curriculum;
  • Can be delivered over a school year or have specific areas targeted;
  • Meets environmental education quality standards and complies with national and state education standards.

MATERIALS

The 500-page Project WILD K-12 Curriculum and Activity Guide and the 250-page Project WILD K-12 Aquatic Curriculum and Activity Guide are the program's core materials. Additional activity guides include Science and Civics: Sustaining Wildlife, WILD about Elk, WILD School sites and others.

EDUCATOR FEEDBACK

Teachers have described Project WILD as well-tested, consistent high quality, comprehensive, having popular and instructive activities, and being highly adaptable to a busy annual syllabus. It adheres to most state and national science, social study, and math standards and encourages reading.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

Project WILD was honored by the White House in 1991 with the Gold Medal for Education and received the Wildlife Society's Conservation Education Award. It has been endorsed by the National Council for Social Studies and is consistent with recommendations of the National Science Teachers Association.
